Portulaca grandiflora (scientific name: Portulaca grandiflora Hook.): annual herb, 10-30 cm high. The stem lies prone or ascending, purple-red, much branched, with clusters of hairs on the nodes. The leaves are dense at the ends of the branches, the lower leaves are irregularly alternate, and the leaves are thin cylindrical and glabrous. Flower solitary or several clusters. Branch ends, 2.5-4 cm in diameter, open and closed day and night; 8-9 leaf-shaped involucres, whorled, with white pilose; petals 5 or double petals, obovate, slightly concave at the top , 12-30 mm long, red, purple or yellow-white. Capsules are nearly elliptical with cracked caps; seeds are small, many, round kidney-shaped, less than 1 mm in diameter. Flowering period from June to September, fruiting period from August to November.


Growth habit

Like a warm, sunny environment, poor growth in dark and humid places. It is extremely resistant to barrenness and can adapt to general soils. It is especially fond of sandy soils with good drainage. Seed reproduction is the mainstay, and the self-sown ability is also strong. Sowing can be done in spring, summer and autumn. When sowing in the open field, the seeds will germinate when the temperature is above 20℃, and germinate about 10 days after sowing.
