Indonesia, 10 January 2022 - Coinciding with Indonesian Environment Day, Tokopedia shared two stories of environmentally friendly MSMEs, Bukan Plastik and Batik Mahkota Laweyan.
External Communications Senior Lead Tokopedia, Ekhel Chandra Wijaya said, "Tokopedia #AlwaysAvailableAlwaysPossible encouraging and supporting Indonesians in taking an active role in protecting the environment, one of which is by providing a stage for local business activists who promote environmentally friendly products or initiatives."
Bukan Plastik, Use Cassava and Bamboo instead of Plastic Bags
Bukan Plastik is an example of an MSME from Semarang on Tokopedia that offers an alternative to single-use plastic. Bukan Plastik products use environmentally friendly organic materials, especially for shopping bags and straws.
Starting from a love of reading since childhood and an awareness of the importance of preserving the earth, Aisa Putri Wibowo founded Bukan Plastik business in April 2020 to invite the public and other business activists to reduce the use of single-use plastic.
“In making the bags, we use cassava starch material which can be easily decomposed in the soil within 180 days. As for the replacement of straws, we use bamboo which is made manually,” said Aisa.
According to Aisa, the presence of the Tokopedia digital platform helps Bukan Plastik invite more people to use products that are more environmentally friendly. "Through Tokopedia, thousands of non-plastic shopping bags are sold every month and our sales have increased 10 times and have even reached the Gorontalo area," concluded Aisa.
Batik Mahkota Laweyan, Prioritize Batik Quality and Environmental Preservation
An example of a local MSME at Tokopedia that also has an initiative to care for the environment is Batik Mahkota Laweyan from Surakarta. This business was founded by Alpha Febela in 2005, one year after the arrival of Kampoeng Batik Laweyan.
This family company that has existed since the 1960s and was vacuumed in the 1990s is here to produce batik with abstract motifs. Mahkota Laweyan Batik products now have SNI and some motifs have been registered to get IPR.
"We have also used the WWTP system to maintain good quality groundwater as an effort to avoid environmental pollution from our batik waste," said Alpha Febela, Owner of the Batik Mahkota Laweyan Business.
Digital platforms such as Tokopedia help Batik Mahkota Laweyan increase transactions by up to 2 times compared to before the pandemic.
“We empower the local community as batik and tailor. We hope to expand our market reach throughout Indonesia through Tokopedia, to be able to restore the economy of the surrounding community, and also to continue to be consistent in preserving the environment," concluded Alpha.
