Jakarta, 28 April 2021 – Tokopedia launched the Waqf feature within the Tokopedia Salam ecosystem, the result of collaboration with a number of institutions, such as the Indonesian Waqf Board (BWI), Dompet Dhuafa and Rumah Zakat.
VP of Public Policy and Government Relations Tokopedia, Astri Wahyuni, revealed, “The role of technology is becoming increasingly crucial in facilitating various aspects of people’s lives, including fulfilling worship needs. Starting from Rp10.000, now anyone can help improve the welfare of others through the Waqf feature on Tokopedia.”
“We hope this feature can make it easier for people to share their kindness, especially during Ramadan, as well as to encourage the democratization of the sharia economy in Indonesia,” added Astri.
The presence of the Waqf feature is also a form of Tokopedia’s support for the National Movement for Waqf (GNWU) initiated by the government.
The Head of Indonesian Waqf Board Implementing Agency, Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Mohammad Nuh, DEA, said, “Apart from being a form of worship, waqf has a socio-economic function and role, especially in building the country’s economic independence. This has become easier through collaboration between BWI and digital platforms such as Tokopedia. It is also in line with the direction of digital transformation that we are promoting.”
Mohammad also added, “By donating money, the community plays a role in economic development. The action of the waqf movement has tremendous social impact. The power of waqf in us. ‘Who am I? What I have is nothing.’ Today this mindset must be changed from competition to synergy. Let us build a tradition of giving to become the best people. I believe this is the substance of waqf. The result is prosperity, preaching and dignity.”
This initiative was also appreciated by the Executive Director of the National Committee for Sharia Economics and Finance (KNEKS), Ventje Rahardjo, “Digital platforms such as Tokopedia play an important role in socializing the halal industry as well as encouraging waqf literacy in Indonesia. Hopefully, this initiative can accelerate the development of the sharia economy in order to strengthen national resilience.”
Apart from Waqf, Tokopedia also presents a number of other features in Tokopedia Salam that can be used to share kindness, such as the features of Donation, Zakat, Fidyah, Charity Box and Qurban.
During last Ramadan 2020, the value of Zakat Maal transactions on Tokopedia increased by 2x compared to Ramadan 2019. On the other hand, Tokopedia users have collected nearly Rp80 billion through the Donation, Zakat and Qurban features throughout 2020.
“Tokopedia, through Tokopedia Salam, will continue to support the government’s efforts in creating an increasingly advanced sharia economic ecosystem through the use of technology,” concluded Astri.
