Tokopedia Reveals Online Shopping Trends for Dry Season, Kite Sales Jump 4.5 Times

Jakarta, 22 August 2023 - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the peak of the dry season in most areas of Indonesia would occur in July-August 2023.

Online shopping trends for hot weather essentials on Tokopedia

1. Sales of outdoor activity products such as volleyballs have almost doubled

2. Vegetable and fruit product transactions increased by almost twofold

"During the peak of the dry season in July 2023, compared to the average monthly transactions throughout 2023, sales of vegetable and fruit products through Tokopedia almost doubled," said Antonia.

3. Ice cream, pudding, and jelly sales increased more than two times

Sweet and refreshing snacks like ice cream are more popular in the dry season with hot weather. "On Tokopedia, snacks such as ice cream, pudding, and jelly experienced a more than two-fold increase in transactions during the peak of the dry season in July 2023, compared to the average monthly transactions throughout 2023," explained Antonia.

5. Trend of buying kites online trend is on the rise; transactions onTokopedia have increased 4.5 times

The weather during the dry season is well suited to fly kites. This has made the kite sales trend on Tokopedia increase rapidly. "During the peak of the hot, dry season in July 2023, compared to the average monthly transaction on Tokopedia throughout 2023, kite sales increased almost 4.5 times," said Antonia.

Sales of several types of kites were selling well. For example, sales of ornamental kites jumped almost 2.5 times, while koang kites jumped more than six times. Sales of kite glass jumped more than six times. Tokopedia also noted that Lampung, West Java, and South Kalimantan were some of the areas with the highest increases in kite product transactions, with an average increase of more than six times.

Several local MSMEs who make kites on Tokopedia, such as DealzBunny and Warung Yoga, experienced a multifold increase in sales during the peak of the dry season.

Preserving traditional kites, revenue for 'DealzBunny' increased ten times through Tokopedia

Feeling concerned about children's excessive use of gadgets, the owner of DealzBunny, Pindyandito Surya, aims to provide outdoor games products, such as a kite to reduce children’s use of gadgets. “In 2018, I started DealzBunny on Tokopedia as a side business. Selling online is very easy because it can be done from anywhere while working,” said Pindyandito.

With the help of his family, especially his wife, Pindyandito has gained profitof up to tens of millions through Tokopedia. One of the best-selling types of kites at DealzBunny stores is character kites, a variation of traditional kites that feature cartoon characters and animals. "During the dry season, kites are highly sought after. This greatly affected our sales on Tokopedia, where there was an almost 10-fold increase in sales during July-August 2023," said Pindyandito.

By utilizing various features on Tokopedia, such as Free Shipping and Product Bundling, Pindyandito is able to sell kites and their supporting products more efficiently. "Through Tokopedia, products from DealzBunny can also be reached by people in all corners of Indonesia, even as far as Kalimantan and Papua," said Pindyandito.

Empowering local kite craftsmen, Tokopedia MSME 'Warung Yoga' has earned tens of millions in profit

The owner of Warung Yoga, Fattah Majid Prayoga, initially started an online business to sell medical masks to address the public’s needs during the pandemic. Over time, Fattah sold other products that were more relevant. “I saw a lot of interest from the neighborhood children towards kites. Eventually, I decided to sell kites through Tokopedia to reach a wider market,” added Fattah.

Fattah has partnered with several kite makers in the area. He also takes advantage of the advertising feature on Tokopedia 'TopAds'. "TopAds is very affordable for businesses and can be purchased starting from IDR 250. By advertising using TopAds, during the pandemic alone, sales of Warung Yoga kites on Tokopedia could reach IDR 21 million in a month,” explained Fattah.

"Thanks to Tokopedia, kite makers’s products in East Jakarta can reach people as far as Kalimantan, Surabaya, Bali and other areas in Indonesia. Amid this year's dry season, our store experienced a sales increase of more than 13.5 times through Tokopedia," said Fattah.
