Indonesia, March 22, 2022 – The number of searches for environmentally friendly—or eco-friendly—products on Tokopedia has increased by 2.5 times in 2021 compared to before the pandemic, revealed Tokopedia’s Senior Lead Public Affairs, Aditia Grasio Nelwan.
In celebration of World Water Day on March 22 and Earth Hour on March 26, 2022, Tokopedia is inviting people to try these five simple ways to start living a sustainable lifestyle.
1. Grow Low-Water Use Plants – Urban farming or gardening in confined spaces has become a popular hobby during the pandemic. Plant seeds, fertilizers, and pots are some of the best-selling plant products and equipment in the Household category on Tokopedia in 2021," explained Aditia.
Choose a type of plant that uses less water and can be used to freshen your décor, for example succulents such as jade plants and cactus vines.
2. Water Plants with Used Water – Washing rice, fruit, or vegetables using running water can inadvertently consume more water. Make it a habit to collect used water and use it keep your plants hydrated.
3. Collect Rainwater – Rainwater collected in a basin or bucket can be used to water plants or wash vehicles. Be sure to close the lid on these containers when the rain stops to prevent mosquitoes from breeding inside.
4. Turn Off Unused Electronic Devices – According to the environmental organization WWF, turning off lights and electronic equipment for an hour can reduce hundreds of tons of carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere
Unplug electronic devices and turn off lights during the day or night when not needed. "Various local businesses on Tokopedia also sell automatic power sockets with timers that can adjust the flow of electricity at specified times," Aditya suggested.
5. Reuse, Reduce, Recycle – The Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle (3R) concept is an effective way to reduce the amount of waste that we produce in our everyday lives.
“For example, you can use reusable foldable bags when shopping. We note that sales of these types of bags on Tokopedia have increased by nearly five times in 2021 compared to the previous year,” Aditia explained.
