This is a book on sexuality but not on sexuality only. I have tried to put sexuality into something of a historical context and then moved on to discuss some varieties of sexual behavior and to comment on the gen- eral state of sexuality in our society today.
Although many clinical observations are made, I have tried to avoid a merely clinical approach to sexuality, since I believe that cultural con- ditioning accounts for a large part of the distinctive character that sexu- ality assumes in any moment of historic time. As nations are said to have the rulers they deserve, so periods of history have the patterns of sexuality that their mores have earned for them.
Among the variations of sexuality I have emphasized bisexuality. homosexuality, fetishism, and sadomasochism, since these I think are not only fairly prevalent in contemporary culture, but are also related to its distinctive characteristics. Other manifestations of sexual expression such as transsexuality, transvestism, and exhibitionism should be dealt with in a more clinical context; these phenomena are disturbances of sexuality as much as they are expressions of the sexual impulse as shaped by the time in which they appear.
My approach to sexuality is primarily existential. Naturally, there- fore, this book owes much to the work of Ricoeur, Boss, and Bins- wanger. In dealing with certain aspects of sexuality, however, I prob- ably have gone beyond the strict psychoanalytic-existential approach; for that, of course, I carry the sole responsibility.
