The choice to work on squid boats for more significant income has led some fishermen to abandon their small traditional boats. The face of the docks has transformed rapidly, as swiftly as the commercial land repurposing occuring along the northern coast of Jakarta. Everything changes, yet the barnacles remain steadfast, clinging and whispering their 'chirps' against the hulls of luxury yachts at Pantai Mutiara or wooden boats in Kampung Dadap, which are unable to set sail due to the machinations of the fuel mafia.
Ziarah Utara has been an annual walking project since 2018 along the northern coast of Jakarta. It is a long-term intervention using a straightforward yet dangerous method in a crowded and polluted city. This journey, which covers a distance of more than 150 km, measures every inch of land slowly sinking, passing privatised and reclaimed beaches in the most strategic locations yet heavily polluted estuaries on the north coast of Jakarta. Ziarah utara documents and collects narratives through interactions with marginalised groups such as traditional fishermen and residents of evicted villages.
