They are part of the current Thai Baht banknotes series. The Bank of Thailand started issuing these 50 Thai Baht banknotes in 2011. They are currently still in circulation. The 50 baht note features the updated portrait of His Royal Highness Rama IX of Thailand. The seated figure on the back of this blue banknote is King Naresuan the Great, pouring water to symbolize the independence of the Ayutthaya Kingdom from the Burmese Taungoo Empire towards the end of the 16th century. King Naresuan is well known in Thailand for his elephant battle against the Burmese Crown Prince Mingyi Swa. In 2017 a new version of this banknote was issued in remembrance of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) who died in 2016. This version shows the King as a teenager on the reverse.
