Samurai S710SC-KI 18oz Japanese Cotton “Kinari” Ecru Selvage Denim
The Japanese color “kinari” roughly translates as ecru or beige, and is a beautiful natural hue achieved here by keeping and using all the little bits of cotton stems and leaves that are usually thrown away. Samurai utilizes their proprietary Samurai Organic Cotton for this special jeans from their Samurai Cotton project.
Samurai Cotton project started with the dream from Tohru Nogami, the Samurai Jeans Owner, of creating things 100% organically and domestically with their own hands. Knowing the fact that Japanese cotton production had dwindled down to almost nothing by about 1970, it doesn’t take any seconds to understand that this is an ambitious project. With the years of repeated trial and error, help from the knowledgable locals and many volunteers involved in this project, Samurai has been able to create their own 100% Japanese Cotton.
The cottons plants are planted, weeded and harvested by hand. Not to mention, the cotton they grow are completely free of chemicals, only organic fertilizers are used in their field. These Japanese cottons has excellent elasticity, moisture absorption, and heat retention owing to the short fibers.
From these cotton, Samurai has created an original thread that retains all this natural goodness, and have left out any kind of dyeing or bleaching in order to preserve the look and feel of the original cotton itself. Then these special threads are woven on vintage looms, resulting in a gorgeous ‘kinari’ color and a texture that is at once heavy, uneven, yet eminently wearable. A texture not to be found anywhere else.
