Guideline for Pipeline Engineering Critical Assessment

Pipeline engineering critical assessment (ECA) is an analytical procedure, based upon fracture mechanics, that allows determination of the maximum tolerable sizes for defects and imperfections of the pipeline weld. ECA is part of integrity cycle which is implemented to evaluate the mechanical integrity of pipeline having defect size beyond acceptance limit or design criterion. it is used to arrive at run-repair-replace or down rate decision making of defect of risers and pipelines. The purpose of the ECA is to determine acceptable flaw sizes that will not cause failure during the installation. When the critical crack size is known , the remaining life of the component can be estimated. Results from ECA analysis will be remaining strength of the material in terms of maximum allowable operating pressure (MAOP), remaining life, and further recommendation on the inspection, maintenance or repair (IMR) plan.
