Since 6 decades ago, the government has tried to eliminate the belief of the Mentawai Indigenous people, Arat Sabulungan.
Combustion of custom tools and equipment until Sikerei's arrest was legalized in Decree No.167/PROMOSI/1954. One goal is to abolish the belief of Arat Sabulungan and force the Mentawai indigenous people to take a religion recognized by the government as their belief.
However, many parties believe that this is only a trick to transfer the function of 601.135 hectares of Mentawai land, most of which are forests to become "mine" for government investment.
Forests that have been the "Qibla" of Arat Sabulungan will be easily controlled if the Mentawai indigenous people believe in other beliefs and become modern.
