The pocket vane shear tester is often used in conjunction with pocket penetrometers to obtain approximations of shear strength of cohesive soils. The Geotest apparatus, while similar in appearance to pocket shear testers sold by others, offers several advantages that more than compensate for its higher cost. ● All metal construction vs. plastic die castings on competitive pocket vane testers. ● Better accuracy and reliability. A major U.S. highway department purchased more than 80 E-285 even though their cost was about 50% greater than charged by a competitive device. ● Much longer life. A metal vane breaking off during use has never been reported. ● A compartmentalized carrying case with a belt loop is included. The standard vaned foot uses a scale of 0 to 1 with the smallest division on the dial being 0.05kg/cm2 (tsf). This permits a visual interpretation to the nearest 0.01kg/cm2 (tsf). In addition to the standard vane, high and low capacity vanes are included giving respective values of 0 to 2.5 and 0 to 0.2 tsf (kg/cm2). The simultaneous use of the TVST and penetrometer allows rapid evaluation of the degree of the internal friction of soil or to determine if the soil is essentially cohesive.
