Garnierite is a rare ore found in pockets, cracks and seams of Serpentinized rocks. It can be composed of a variety of different minerals including Chlorite, Falcondoite, Serpentine and Talc as well as a variety of clay mineral such as Sepiolite and Smectite.
Garnierite is mostly composed of Quartz which usually takes up to 50% of the composition, Magnesium Oxide usually taking over 30%, and Nickel Oxide with usually a low content of 4-8%. These composition can affect the colour of specimens, high nickel content can make the specimen have a darker green colour while high magnesium content can make it light green.
These garnierites have been forming since the uplift of the eastern Sulawesi ophiolite, almost 33-23 million years ago, where chemical reactions occurred within the
syntectonic faults and joints during laterization, and serpentine-like garnierite precipitated by replacing the Mg
in lizardite with the Ni in solution. After syntectonic faults and joints were formed, rainwater infiltrated cracks, seams and pockets to form these garnierites.
All of our garnierites specimens are supplied from local nickel miners in Southeast Sulawesi, Including this one.
