Starting Die Before cutting threads on rod or pipe, grind or file small bevel on edge of piece to be threaded. This makes starting easier. Place die in stock with size marking visible. Tighten set screw(s) in die stock. Adjust die stock guide by turning cam plate so that guide pins are against work to be threaded. Fasten work and apply good grade cutting oil. Grasp die stock with both hands near the die and place tapered side of die over end of rod or pipe. Press down firmly and work die back and forth, just as you work a tap.Be sure die goes on squarely. Holding Die Stock after Thread is Started After thread is started, grasp die stock by both handle ends and with steady back and forth movement continue turning die onto work, advancing only slightly with each turn. It is no longer necessary to press down because the die will draw itself onto the work when turned.
