Writing Paper China Reconstructs 1962

The editors of China Reconstructs have chosen these twelve designs from Specimens of Writing-Paper Made in Peking, a celebrated collection of wood block printed writing-paper, and reproduced them as the 1962 Social Gift Offer to subscribers of the magazine. For many centuries in China, writing-paper has been decorated with paintings or artistic designs over which letters or poems are written with brush and black ink. It was with the idea of preserving this traditional art which was disappearing in the thirties that Lu Hsun (1881 - 1936), China #39;s great revolutionary writer and promoter of the art of woodcuts, and the late Cheng Cheng-to writer and art critic, edited and published Specimens of Writing-Paper Made in Peking in 1933. At that time designs were collected from stationers in Peking and published in six volumes. The original edition was limited to 100 copies and was reprinted in 1958.
