Nigara Forging has a history of over 350 years since being appointed by the domain of Tsugaru to make japanese swords,
As one of the few noble swordsmiths in Japan, they have continued to preserve this art. The 5th Nigara Kunitoshi, a master swordsmith during the showa era was often recognized for his works.
The current (8th) generation blacksmith, Tsuyoshi Yoshizawa is supported by his father Toshiju Yoshizawa who has keen interests in art and music.
As time goes on, the making of swords has been abandoned as a business item but the same forging techniques such as welding and hammering have been kept alive in the making of their knives. They are officially certified as Aomori Prefecture Traditional Crafts in December 2007.
