Book Overview
Although numerous studies of Max Weber’s analysis of capitalism and asceticism in Europe and Asia have been undertaken, there have been few sociological commentaries on Weber’s view of Islamic society. This book is concerned with this neglected area in the sociology of religion and, more particularly, with Weber’s commentary on patrimonial bureaucracies in Islamic societies.
Weber’s view of Islam, while interesting in its own right, is important because it directs further light on his total sociology. The particular features of his sociology of Islam examined here are the prophet Muhammad; charismatic origins of Islam; mysticism and saintship; the city in Islam; and Holy Law. Among the main themes treated are Weber’s failure to adhere to his own philosophical criteria of adequate sociological analysis (‘interpretative sociology’) when he approached Islam, and the basic convergence of the perspectives of Marx and Weber on Oriental society.
