With over 350 years of history, beginning with crafting swords for the Tsugaru clan in the early Edo period, Nigara Hamono has preserved its blacksmithing tradition through eight generations.
The 5th generation blacksmith, Kunitoshi Nigara, was a legendary swordsmith who earned numerous accolades, honorary titles, and even knighthood. Today, the legacy continues under the 8th generation master Tsuyoshi Yoshizawa, supported by his father Toshiju Yoshizawa, whose passion for art and music inspires Nigara’s unique designs. The renowned Anmon pattern was born from Toshiju’s admiration for Andy Warhol’s pop art, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern artistic expression.
Beyond bladesmithing, Nigara’s expansion into construction steelworks has provided unmatched in-house expertise in steel finishing — setting Nigara apart as one of Japan’s most exceptional knife makers.
