This book is a beginning text on the unit operations. It is written for undergraduate students in the junior or senior years who have the usual training in mathematies, physics, chemistry, and mechanics. An ele-mentary knowledge of material-balance calculations and thermodynamics
is helpful but not essential. We have continued the traditions of earlier books on this subject.
During the past generation the unit-operation approach has demonstrated its usefulness, both in education and in engineering practice. Although certain operations-notably gas absorption, distillation, and extraction-have tended to fuse together, we believe it wise to protect the integrity of the individual operation by giving it separate treatment, as each one has a definite task to perform.
The limits of the text are fixed by space and by level of treatment. Many of the less conventional operations, such as adsorption, dialysis.
expression, colloid milling, ion exchange, freezing, sublimation, and specialized methods of mechanical separation, are omitted because of space. Other important topics have been left out because of space and because any adequate treatment of them would raise the level of the book to a point inaccessible to the undergraduate. For these reasons, multicomponent separations, transient phenomena, and two- and three-dimensional flow patterns have been omitted or touched on but lightly.
Every effort has been made to keep a uniform level of treatment through-out the book.
An effort has also been made to carry the treatment to a point where the student will find an easy transition to more advanced and specialized chemical engineering handbooks, texts, and monographs.
Two ideas have influenced the choice of equipment for discussion in the text. Most of the standard "bread-and-butter" types are shown, and a selection of newer and more specialized devices has also been included. The choice of the latter is quite arbitrary, but those illus-trating important engineering principles have been favored.
The coverage of subject matter in the second edition is much the same as that in the first, but with differences in emphasis and rearrange
ment of subject matter. The material has been updated in the light of the significant improvements that have been effected in the foundations of the basic unit operations during the decade since the publication of the first edition. The discussion of fluid mechanics has been rewritten, and each of several large chapters on this and other key subjects has been broken down into several smaller chapters. Less emphasis is placed on the detailed description of common devices, on rare and little-used types of equipment, and on certain kinds of mechanical separations. The discussions of fluid flow at high velocities, crystallization, and mixing of liquids have been lengthened. New material has been added on the flow of non-Newtonian liquids and the mixing of solids and pastes. The changes place added emphasis on those subjects that are particularly important to the chemical engineer.
