This book is a beginning text on the unit operations of chemical engineering. It is written for undergraduate students in the junior or senior years who have completed the usual courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and an introduction to chemical engineering. An elementary knowledge of material and energy balances and of thermodynamic principles is assumed.
In structure and general level of treatment, this revised edition follows the pattern of the previous editions. Separate chapters are devoted to each of the principal operations, which are grouped in four main sections: fluid mechanics, heat transfer, equilibrium stages and mass transfer, and operations involving particulate solids. One-semester or one-quarter courses may be based on any of these sections or combinations of them.
The limits of the text are fixed by space and level of treatment. Many of the less conventional operations, such as membrane separations, colloid milling. freezing, and specialized methods of mechanical separation, are omitted because of lack of space. Other important topics have been left out because any adequate treatment of them would raise the level of the book to a point inaccessible to most undergraduates. For these reasons, two-phase flow, three-dimensional flow pat-terns, electrical and magnetic effects, and multicomponent separations either have been omitted or are touched on but lightly. Every effort has been made to keep a uniform level of treatment throughout the book.
Because chemical engineering students almost universally complete a course in material and energy balances in their first or second year, material on these topics has largely been deleted from Chap. 1. Thermodynamics is also covered in other courses in chemical engineering curricula: in consequence, the chapter on phase equilibria has been omitted, although some of the phase diagrams appear in other chapters as needed for the discussion of the various separations. The Ponchon method of estimating equilibrium stages is no longer included, since it is rarely if ever used in practice; for simple separations the McCabe-Thiele method is entirely adequate and for more complex separations computer methods are used.
