Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is the amount of oxidant consumed when a certain strong oxidant is used to treat a water sample under certain conditions. It is an indicator of the amount of reducing substances in water.
This instrument uses a special reagent which contains a compound catalyst that both accelerates the reaction and has an anti-interference effect on the chloride ions. The water sample undergoes a rapid redox reaction with the special reagent in the digester, which produces trivalent chromium ions, the concentration of which is determined spectrophotometrically to give the corresponding COD value.
