Sculpture is as old as Man and reflects the development of Man over twenty-two thousand years. Germain Bazin, of the great Musée du Louvre, provides an overall view of its history, worldwide: from the earliest carbon-dated representation of the human head in the Palaeolithic period through the great Egyptian, Assyrian, Indian, Chinese and Greek phases, the medieval and Renaissance periods, the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (Maillol and Rodin) to the present day—Picasso, Henry Moore, Giacometti.
This concise history of a vast subject is illustrated with 553 examples in colour with descriptive captions that allow the book to be used as a ready guide to great works of art that will enrich visits to the leading galleries and museums of the world in both hemispheres. Many of the unnamed artists will come as an exciting revelation of the art, illustrating as they do how it developed, ever reaching new peaks of mastery. The chronological arrangement of the plates enables the reader to compare with ease period with period, master with master, to the increased appreciation of both.
This is a book that will be salutary for those who are inclined to be 'affronted' by present-day modern artists, represented for instance in London's Tate Gallery, whose work can be compared with that of much earlier periods in the East and West; they will come to recognise that these 'moderns' are merely continuing a tradition that no doubt shocked ancient generations in their day, only to be appreciated much later. Violence, even crudity, have always played their part in art as these influences have in their turn affected civilisation. As the author remarks: 'For a long time, Prehistoric art was merely a controversial subject for palaeontology. . .and only recently entered the domain of art history.'
