Summary
In A Heap of Ashes I have translated five works of Pramoedya’s in which (I believe) his strengths are most obvious, and his weaknesses least in evidence. The stories were written separately but have a number of underlying points of unity which give them continuity.
The first is historical. The stories follow the development of the Indonesian Republic, from the early growth and suppression of nationalist consciousness under the Dutch in the years 1920 to 1940, to the Japanese Occupation (1942 to 1945) and the Indonesian Revolution (1945 to 1949), through to the consequent disillusionment with liberal democracy which precipitated Sukarno’s “Guided Democracy” in 1959.
The second is the interplay of the figures of father and son. The father is presented as an ardent nationalist, teaching in a nationalist school, and – when his hopes are shattered by the Dutch – as a compulsive gambler. He is a fairly static figure, and he contrasts with the growing personality of the son, struggling to understand himself and the world around him, and to define his relationship with his family.
