It is now 40 years since lan Donald first started to use ultrasound in obstetrics and gynecology. In a relatively short period of time ultrasound has improved in what seems to be a logarithmic progression, and it can with good reason be said to have changed our way of thinking of our age. The magnitude of this step alone is incalculable. Moreover, more than any other modern technique, ultrasound has made it obvious that the fetus is an individual virtually from conception
Furthermore, technical improvements in ultrasonic instrumentation have opened new avenues to the visualization and evaluation of normal and abnormal fetal anatomy and normal anatomy and pathological conditions in the female pelvis. They have introduced completely new methods into the diagnosis and treatment of certain fetal diseases (e.g. fetal surgery, uteroplacental blood flow) as well as new applications of ultrasound in the treatment of gynecological diseases and provided for a better understanding of ovarian physiology (monitoring of follicular growth, ultrasonically guided follicular punctures for in vitro fertilization, the assessment of ovarian and uterine perfusion).
The most exciting recent developments are color Doppler and transvaginal sonography The combination of these two modalities in the same vaginal probe provides for superb simultaneous visualization of structural and flow information and offers new insight into dynamic studies of blood flow within the female pelvis. Most of these exciting developments are illustrated in this book.
