"There are several respects in which this is a notable study even beyond its contribution to our understanding of cannibalism and its prohibition in human history. The chief theoretical resource for the study is drawn from Sigmund Freud, although it is a cultural and historical study and not a study of an individual biography. It thus falls under the rubric of psychohistory or psychoanalytic sociology. But unlike the authors of many studies in this genre, Mr. Sagan has a grasp on the nature of sociocultural process that prevents him from reducing it to direct psychological expression. Indeed, sociocultural process is itself seen as actively contributing to change in personality structure throughout history.
