Rameau's Nephew is an unclassifiable masterpiece of world literature which has won the admiration of men as diverse as Goethe (who translated the French manuscript into German and thus first presented it to the world) and Sigmund Freud (who quoted it with wonder, and whose Oedipus Complex was prefigured in one of its brilliant insights). It is a dialogue between the 18th century French philosopher of the Enlightenment and a wild and dissolute musician who lives as a sycophant in the entourage of whatever rich man (or woman) will have him. The philosopher defends the life of dignity and reason; Rameau's nephew defends the life he leads And in our inability to discern who has won we can see the clear light of the Enlightenment dissolving into the shadow and darkness of Romanticism and the modern age.

Rameau's Nephew is here brilliantly translated by Jacques Barzun. Printed together with it in this book are Diderot's great dialogue on civilized and savage sexual morality, Supplement to Bougainville's Voyage; D'Alembert's Dream, another major dialogue on the origins and nature of consciousness; an essay from the great Encyclopedia on the word "Encyclopedia"; and some shorter pieces, all translated for this book by Ralph H. Bowen. Assistant Professor of History at Columbia University. There is also an introductory essay on Diderot by Mr Bowell.
