Book Overview
The body is one of the most fertile sources of human expression. Think of painting or sculpture, from any cezitiry, or any culture. There is nothing more immediate to us, few images more potent.
We used to use our bodies as part of our visual art tradition, when we painted and tattooed them, and dressed them with ceremony and ritual. But in western society in the twentieth century, we tend to think of anything to do with covering the body in terms of fashion-no matter how thoughtful the design, how skilled the crafting, these body coverings are merely garments. We do use the body in our art, in dance, theatre or abstracted performance, but the coverings used are categorised as costume, an accessory to a greater creative endeavour.
Wearable art pulls art back against the body. It makes the body an internal frame for personal expression, and in doing so makes a great deal of new art possible. It allows a celebration of the body, and an examination of the meaning and values of cloth- ing, subjects of immediate and intimate importance to all of us. It also allows the whimsy, fantasy and humour with which we dress ourselves every day, at least mentally, to be shared with the crowd.
This is an art form that spreads across a dozen disciplines and embraces a multitude of philosophies. The pieces that are paraded on moving bodies in wearable art shows do not have to be practical, they do not have to be commercially viable, they do not even have to take themselves seriously-they have but a single requirement: to be wearable. This leaves the door wide open to elements as diverse as painting, sculpture, textiles, costuming, engineering and electronics. Any skill can be adapted to make wearable art, any idea can take shape on the body.
