When you see the internal layout and power supply section, you will understand and realize how and why this player is so famous in the era, compared to the latest player it still have an edge against the new arrival in term of everything
To get this quality now a days you need to pay at least USD 20K, and the down side of this player is only the Optical pick up lens (VAU 1254) the good news is we still have the original parts although very expensive.
The Nº390S featured two digital inputs, RCA and XLR analogue outputs, HDCD compatibility and was one of the few players to feature a multi-bit Sigma/Delta capable of upsampling. Whether playing a CD, or decoding an external digital signal sample depth is increased to 24 bits and sample rate increased to 352.8kHz or 384kHz (input rate dependent) before conversion to an analogue signal. Finally, to top off this huge feature set the Nº390S incorporates a fully balanced analogue volume control.
Side Note
The 390S has a high-quality analog volume control that can be switched in- and out of circuit. Unlike other volume controls on CD players, the 390S’ variable level should not be set to 100 for unity, rather somewhere around 63. Importantly, while I am no fan of connecting CD players directly to power amplifiers, the 390S is the best CD player that I have yet heard when connected as such. Unlike CD players with digital volume controls, the sound is always highly resolving, even at very low levels. However, switching the variable volume control in circuit changes the sound. On the fixed setting, the player sounds very smooth, tonally rich and full and quite relaxed, but on variable, the tonality becomes thinner and the whole sound is tighter, less free-flowing. My advice, therefore, is to not use the volume control if a preamp is already in place.
