A BRIEF HISTORY ABOUT THE FARMPantan Musara is a family-owned farm and washing station located in the Pegasing sub-district of Takengon, Central Aceh. Hendra’s father, Hamdan, moved into the area in 2006 and bought one hectare of land to start growing coffee. Hendra later established the Avatara Project in 2019 to continue improving the quality of coffee coming from his farm by experimenting with and innovating post-harvest processing techniques.
In this single variety lot, trained pickers collected ripe cherries from identified Abyssinia trees. The coffee cherries are then fermented in tanks filled with CO2, creating an anaerobic environment in which specific bacteria and yeast break down sugar. After fermentation, the cherries are gently dried on raised beds in the shade for 14-20 days before being moved to the patio for further drying.
Prof. P.J.S. Cramer introduced the Abyssinian lines in East Java in 1920s, and some of them made their way to Aceh Tengah, where they were given the name "Rambung". Despite its mild susceptibility to coffee leaf rust, this bronze tip coffee variety is not particularly popular among farmers. It is reported that productivity diminishes after ten years, and the tree size is excessively large, reducing the number of trees per hectare.
