5 Easy Steps to Start an Eco-Friendly Lifestyle With ‘Tokopedia Hijau'

Indonesia, 24 July 2023 - The Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia (KemenLHK RI)’s data records that Indonesia’s volume of waste in 2022 will reach 28.7 million tons.*

“Reducing the volume of waste is our shared responsibility. Tokopedia, in support of the 'GoTo 2030 Zero Waste Mission', for example, has launched the Tokopedia Hijau movement. Through this movement, Tokopedia encourages as many people as possible to implement environmentally friendly principles in their daily lives," said Aditia Grasio Nelwan, Public Affairs Senior Lead Tokopedia.

Aditia added, "Tokopedia continues to educate sellers about the importance of establishing sustainable businesses. We also encourage and support the community to contribute in protecting the environment by purchasing eco-friendly products through the Tokopedia Hijau page."

Demand Grows for Eco-Friendly Products, Tokopedia Hijau Transactions Increases >3.5 Times

"Tokopedia Hijau has proven to increase public interest in several regions in Indonesia to buy eco-friendly products. Bengkalis (Riau), Banyuasin (South Sumatra) and Temanggung (Central Java) are some areas with the highest increase in the number of buyers through the Tokopedia Hijau page in June 2023, with an average increase of more than 3 times," explained Aditia.**

Communities in various regions of Indonesia are increasingly aware of the importance of choosing eco-friendly products. "Sungai Penuh (Jambi), Trenggalek (East Java), and Tanah Bumbu (South Kalimantan) are areas with the highest transactions increase through Tokopedia Hijau during June 2023, with an average increase of more than 3.5 times," said Aditia.**

"In addition oats, cotton, tissue, and bath soap are some of the best-selling eco-friendly products on Tokopedia Hijau throughout the second quarter of 2023," said Aditia.

Five Ways to Start a Sustainable Lifestyle With Tokopedia Hijau

Everyone can take part in protecting the environment by implementing a more sustainable lifestyle. Tokopedia, through Aditia, revealed five tips and recommendations for local MSMEs selling eco-friendly products through Tokopedia Hijau.

1. Use recycled shopping bags to reduce plastic waste

Minimizing the use of plastic bags is a simple way to reduce plastic waste. In some cities in Indonesia, businesses are also refrained from giving away plastic bags for free and are required to reduce the supply of plastic bags.

“Reducing plastic waste must start from ourselves. To start small, we can bring a foldable bag every time we leave the house to reduce the use of plastic bags when we shop. One of the local MSMEs in Tokopedia Hijau that makes eco-friendly foldable bags is Recycling Village," said Aditia.

Recycling Village creates bags out of recycled plastic waste. In producing their products, Recycling Village employs women artisans in Air Naningan, Tanggamus Regency, Lampung Province. The colors on Recycling Village products come from the colors of recycled plastic waste, creating a unique composition for each Recycling Village products.

2. Reduce textile waste by using sustainable fashion

Clothing or fabrics that contain synthetic fibers, such as polyester, tend to be more difficult to decompose and can contaminate groundwater. "To help reduce textile waste, choose sustainable fashion or environmentally friendly clothing that prioritizes product quality over quantity. One of the local MSMEs in Tokopedia Hijau that has implemented environmentally friendly principles to its fashion products is KaIND," Aditia explained.

KaIND was founded by Melie Indarto in 2015 and has partnered with dozens of local artisans, batik makers, and more than 200 farmers in Pasuruan, East Java, to produce fabricated silk threads by utilizing the cultivation of eri silkworms. KaIND strives to preserve the environment by using natural dyes in most of their production process.

“Sustainable fashion is not a passing trend but a necessary step towards a more sustainablefuture. KaIND encourages everyone to join the movement of using organic fabrics and support the local fashion industry's efforts in becoming more environmentally conscious,” said Melie.

3. Replace plastic spoons and forks with more eco-friendly cutlery

Further efforts to reduce plastic waste can also be made by avoiding spoons, forks, and drinking glasses made of plastic. "Lekuk by Mendekor, an MSME on Tokopedia Hijau, utilizes natural raw materials, such as clay and rocks, to make eco-friendly cutlery," explained Aditia.

Lekuk by Mendekor, established by Brian Karno, specializes in producing and selling a wide range of interior decoration items. Brian collaborates with over 30 artisans from diverse backgrounds across Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, and Kalimantan. His ultimate goal is to empower these local artisans to create top-quality products that can compete with international brands.

"Lekuk by Mendekor also provides eco-friendly packaging options such as paper bubble wrap for buyers on Tokopedia, and the response is always very positive," said Brian.

4. Use skin and environmentally friendly organic beauty products

Natural ingredients in beauty or body care products can nourish the skin and are safe for sensitive skin prone to allergies. What’s more, waste from organic beauty products tends to be more environmentally friendly because it does not contain harmful chemicals.

Products from sellers on Tokopedia, such as Pourie.co, are made with natural ingredients, such as coffee beans which can exfoliate the skin, relieve inflammation of the skin, and many other benefits. “The products from Pourie.co products are free of harmful chemicals. Besides being gentle on the skin, our products are also more environmentally friendly," explained Kiara Flisha, owner of Pourie.co.

5. Foster children’s creativity by making toys from recycled cardboard

"The reuse and recycle principle can be applied to various items, including children's toys. For example, large cardboard boxes left over from package wrappers can be used to create houses and other creations that children can think of and work on," said Aditia.

Kraf Studio is a seller on Tokopedia that implements the reuse and recycle principle. They offer patterns for making cardboard crafts like masks, robot helmets, and other fun toys that are durable, look good, and easy to put together. “Kraft Studio products not only provide entertainment for children but also serve as a teaching aid for parents to show their kids the importance of embracing eco-friendly habits,” said Dian Arismawan, owner of Kraf Studio.
