National Tax Day: Understanding the Different Types and Benefits of Taxes

Check out the various benefits of paying taxes, how to easily pay taxes online, and the tax payment trends on Tokopedia, which have increased sharply!

Indonesia, 13 July 2023 - Taxes are instrumental for the nation’s progress. Indonesia’s Directorate General of Taxes (DJP RI) declares July 14th as the National Tax Day to educate the public about their obligations to pay various types of taxes that support the economy of the nation.

The origins story of National Tax Day date back to the first mention of the word 'tax' by the Chairman of the Investigative Agency for Preparatory Work for Indonesian Independence (BPUPKI), Radjiman Wedyodiningrat, who proposed that tax collection should be governed by law. In the second draft of Indonesia’s Constitution, which was submitted on 14 July 1945, the word ‘tax’ was mentioned and reads, “All taxes for state needs are based on the Law.” Since then, 14 July 1945 has been declared as the Birth of Taxes.*

"In honor of National Tax Day, Tokopedia continues to intensify our Loket Pajak Tokopedia initiative. This initiative is a result of Tokopedia’s collaboration with the central and regional government and other strategic partners to further facilitate online tax payments and support the development of Indonesia," said Jonathan Tricahyo, Head of Sales and Operation Development Tokopedia.

Thanks to the Loket Pajak Tokopedia initiative, in 2021, the Directorate General of Treasury (DJPb) of the Indonesian Ministry of Finance named Tokopedia as the number one collecting agent in the Lembaga Persepsi Lainnya (LPL) category at the Collecting Agent Performance (CAP) Awards. This award is given based on three parameters: state revenue's nominal contribution, the number of transactions, and operational performance.

Beyond the country’s development, these types of taxes also benefits the public

Indonesian citizens (WNI) are required to pay various types of taxes. Thus, it’s important to understand the details of the taxes paid and the multiple benefits for individuals and the state. Tokopedia, through Jonathan, also explained several types of taxes and their uses, and how to easily pay taxes online through Tokopedia.

“Tokopedia strives to increase public awareness about tax obligations and its benefits. This will help individuals understand the different types of taxes and contribute to national development by fulfilling their tax obligations,” said Jonathan.

Building public facilities through Land and Building Tax (PBB)

PBB is a tax that must be paid annually by individuals and entities who own land and buildings. PBB is collected by city and district-level governments and is part of the region’s source of income, or Pendapatan Asli Daerah (PAD), which is used to finance the construction of public facilities, such as roads, bridges, schools and many more.

"On Tokopedia, people's participation in paying PBB online continues to increase. In the first semester of 2023 compared to the first semester of 2022, the value of PBB payment transactions through Tokopedia has increased more than double," said Jonathan. Tokopedia has facilitated PBB payments in more than 260 cities/districts throughout Indonesia.

“Paying PBB through Tokopedia is very easy. (1) Type Loket Pajak Tokopedia in the search column of the Tokopedia app or website, then select PBB. (2) Fill in the province, city/regency, and the tax year to be paid. (3) Enter your Tax Object Number, then click Cek Tagihan to see the details of the bill. (4) Select the desired payment method. (5) When the payment is successful, the Tokopedia system will send a notification containing valid proof of payment," explained Jonathan.

Motor Vehicle Tax (PKB) payments maintain roads and public transportation

People who own motorized vehicles are required to pay the PKB every year. "PKB is included in the provincial tax and is a source of regional income. This tax is used to finance regional development, including the maintenance of roads, public transportation, and facilities in various regions in Indonesia," explained Jonathan.

“Paying for PKB online through Tokopedia is very practical. (1) Type Loket Pajak Tokopedia in the search coulmn on the Tokopedia app or website, then select E-Samsat. (2) Select an area, enter the payment code, and click Cek Tagihan. (3) Select the payment method according to your preference. (4) If the payment is successful, the user will receive proof of payment via email, which can be used as a complementary document for the STNK validation process," said Jonathan.

Jonathan added, "Tokopedia recorded that the value and number of PKB transactions through Tokopedia increased by almost 1.5 times each in the first semester of 2023, compared to the first semester of 2022."

Taxes and State Revenue can easily be paid through Loket Pajak Tokopedia

Through Loket Pajak Tokopedia, the public can fulfill all tax obligations under the management of the Indonesian Directorate General of Taxes, such as Income Tax (PPh 21, PPh 22, PPh 23, PPh 24, PPh 25, PPh 29, PPh Final) and Program Pengungkapan Sukarela (PPS). Individuals can also pay Penerimaan Negara Bukan Pajak (PNBP), such as paying for passports and KUA, government service fees, fees for granting patents, etc.

On the other hand, other state revenues that can be paid through Tokopedia are the Bea Cukai and Surat Berharga Negara (SBN), letters issued by the government to finance the state budget, which is managed by the Directorate General of Financing and Risk Management of the Ministry of Finance (DJPPR.)

"Tokopedia believes that digitizing tax payments is very important to help people access higher quality public services. In the future, Tokopedia seeks to continuously collaborate and bring innovation with strategic partners to provide convenience to the community and support the government's commitment to accelerating digitalization in Indonesia," concluded Jonathan.
