Jakarta, 30 September 2022 - Indonesia’s technology company, Tokopedia, launches technology conference START Elevate, specifically about best practices in product design. Bringing 'Humanizing Design at Scale' as its theme, START Elevate features dozens of product design experts, such as Tokopedia's Head of Product and UX Research, Jesslyn Siswanto, and Tokopedia's AVP of Product Design, Momo Halim.
Jesslyn and Momo also shared some tips to have a successful career as a product designer, while more insights will be accessible through the START Elevate conference.
- Prioritize the consumer's perspective - A customer-driven mindset will help product designers create innovations that meet users’ needs. "Given the diversity of the Indonesian people, such as ethnicity as well as social and economic background, considering the consumers’ preferences is crucial when designing a product," Siswanto explained.
- Empathy starts from listening – “Changes are constantly happening in the realm of product design and technology, so being open to new perspectives/feedback from the team and the users, and empathizing with the impact of these changes is key. We can develop empathy by listening,” Halim said.
- Develop User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX) skills - UI/UX is a product design component that determines the journey and visual appearance (color or creativity, etc.) of a digital product, such as an application, and ensures it is user-friendly and comfortable.
As the design system evolves, product designers will increasingly collaborate with the UI/UX team to offer an optimal user experience.
- Enrich your data processing experiences - Finding and processing data, as well as analyzing it in a systematic and structured manner, is critical. A product designer is exposed to a lot of data, such as conversion rate, click-through rate (CTR), financial metrics, and others. The analysis or insights from the data will be useful in the product development process.
- Promote synergy and collaboration - A product designer works with multiple teams. For example, to improve the quality of a service feature, a product designer needs to collaborate with the research team and the engineering team for the features to accurately address user needs.
