Tokopedia Reveals Online Shopping Trends During Ramadhan-Eid 2023

Jakarta, 9 May 2023 - The moments of Ramadhan to Eid 2023 have been put to good use by entrepreneurs in Indonesia, especially local MSMEs, to create online business opportunities and even boost sales as people's purchasing power tends to increase.

"Household Supplies, Food and Beverage, and Fashion are some of the best-selling categories on Tokopedia during Ramadan until Eid 2023.* This finding is in line with the current condition where people can directly get together with family and relatives again," said Ekhel Chandra Wijaya, Head of Tokopedia Corporate Affairs.

Best Selling Products of Ramadhan-Eid 2023 and Other Interesting Findings at Tokopedia

"Rice, instant noodles, and spring onions are listed as the best-selling products on Tokopedia NOW! throughout Ramadan until Eid 2023. This service makes it easier for the public to shop for their daily needs, including fresh ingredients for sahur and iftar dishes, within a maximum of two hours after payment and free delivery,” explained Ekhel.

In the Fashion category, Tokopedia's internal data shows that t-shirts, shoes, and headscarves are the products most people buy from Ramadan to Eid this year.

"On the other hand, people still rely on online channels to buy food or beverages. In the Tokopedia NYAM! campaign, we recorded that dates, honey, and food parcels were the most purchased products during Ramadan-Eid 2023," said Ekhel.

"The farthest distance for sending parcels via Tokopedia during the Ramadan-Lebaran 2023 period is from Jakarta to Jayapura (more than 3,500 km). The success or smooth delivery of these and all other deliveries during peak seasons such as Ramadan and Eid, was due to Tokopedia's collaboration with more than 14 connected logistics partners and we appreciate this," explained Ekhel.

Tokopedia also makes it easier for people to travel to their hometowns by providing a variety of public transportation ticket options, one of which is by airplane. "We recorded the most sold flight destination tickets during Ramadhan 2023 was to Sidoarjo," said Ekhel.

Throughout Ramadhan until Eid 2023, Tokopedia together with entrepreneurs will also continue to present various interactive live shopping shows through the Tokopedia PLAY video streaming channel. "Ngabuburit hours, the time before iftar, is the period most people use to enjoy Tokopedia PLAY shows," added Ekhel.

Tokopedia, together with trusted and verified humanitarian agencies, also makes it easier for people to carry out their prayers, including giving zakat online. "During Ramadan until Eid 2023, more than Rp. 5 billion in zakat was collected on Tokopedia," concluded Ekhel.

More than 40% of Dilayani Tokopedia Orders Throughout Ramadhan 2023 Delivered Using Instant Couriers

Tokopedia launched various initiatives to #LengkapiRamadan for entrepreneurs so they can maximize sales. One of which is the Hyperlocal initiative.

Tokopedia Hyperlocal applies geo-tagging technology to bring sellers closer to buyers wherever they are. This initiative consists of various manifestations, such as Kumpulan Toko Pilihan (KTP) and the fulfillment service Dilayani Tokopedia.** "Tokopedia's internal data shows that more than 40% of orders with Dilayani Tokopedia during Ramadan 2023 were sent using the instant delivery service," said Ekhel.

In addition to the Hyperlocal initiative, Tokopedia also launched Ramadan in Style, a special campaign for local entrepreneurs of Muslim prayer supplies and fashion for both men and women. One example of a local MSME that joined Tokopedia Ramadan in Style and received various achievements is Universa Sajadah.

There is also the Tokopedia NYAM! campaign which specifically unites entrepreneurs from various regions in Indonesia to provide food and beverage products. Bruule is an MSME that participated in this campaign and recorded many benefits, especially during Ramadan to Eid 2023.

Tokopedia MSME Universa Sajadah Earns Hundreds of Millions through Sales of Prayer Items

Starting from a desire to earn additional income when he was an office worker and as an effort to study religion, Renato Akbar founded Universa Sajadah in 2014. Until now, Universa Sajadah offers various collections of religious paraphernalia, one of which is a prayer rug with a plain motif.

"The name Universa Sajadah is taken from the word universe, with the hope that Universa Sajadah can become a brand for prayer items that can be reached by Muslim people from all backgrounds throughout Indonesia," said Akbar.

Universa Sajadah has joined Tokopedia since its inception. "Now almost 50% of Universa Sajadah's sales come from Tokopedia. This figure dominates when compared to other sales platforms," said Akbar. Akbar employed several local tailors in Depok, West Java, to produce prayer rugs, sarongs, and robes.

“Ramadan is a moment that brings blessings to us where we can partner with more freelance workers to deal with the surge in orders. We can earn hundreds of millions every Ramadan through Tokopedia. In addition, thanks to this year's Tokopedia Ramadan in Style campaign, our sales have increased by more than five times compared to the usual months," added Akbar.

Bruule, The Last Effort to Save a Collapsed Business During the Pandemic

Armed with a family recipe passed down from generation to generation, husband and wife pair Reza Harisky and Sarila Danubrata and their partner Chaka Ramadhan founded Bruule in March 2020. Bruule's existence was Sarila's and her friends' last attempt to survive because the hotel business owned by Reza collapsed due to the pandemic.

The economic conditions during the pandemic made Bruule a business that was initially established with limited capital and only accepted orders using a pre-order system. "Bruule's first oven was purchased using the installment method through Tokopedia," said Sarila.

Through Bruule, not only did Reza, Sarila, and Chaka feel the benefits but they can also make a positive impact on the economy of local residents, including suppliers, online motorcycle taxi drivers, and others. Thanks to Bruule, workers who previously had to be laid off from Reza's hotel business were able to be rehired.

“Tokopedia has played a major role in Bruule's business development since joining in August 2020. For example, thanks to insights gained from the dashboard on the Tokopedia Seller application, Bruule saw that greeting card transactions at our store are comparable to sales of other Bruule products. This has encouraged us to innovate in providing Bruule hampers and eventually, they have become our best-selling product to date," said Sarila.

Bruule also diligently participates in various campaigns on Tokopedia, such as Tokopedia NYAM! "Thanks to the many campaigns that we have participated in, the various branches of the Bruule online store in Tokopedia, which are spread across Jakarta and Bandung, experienced an average increase of transactions of four times during the month of Ramadan compared to normal months," concluded Sarila.
