Unhealthy Air Quality? Tokopedia Shares Simple Solutions to Reduce Air Pollution

Check out five ways to tackle air pollution and online shopping trends for air purifiers, air purifying plants, health products, anti-pollutant skincare, and electric vehicles on Tokopedia!

Jakarta, 24 August 2023 - Recently, the air quality in various regions of Indonesia has been poor, especially in large cities like Jakarta. The historical graph of air quality in Jakarta over the past month indicates that the Air Quality Index or AQI in Jakarta can reach 164. According to the World Health Organization's (WHO) annual air quality guideline, this figure is in the unhealthy category. Air pollution can affect the entire population, and carry serious health problems for people who are affected by it.

"Improving air quality should be a collective effort, and all parties should play a role in reducing air pollution. As an Indonesian technology company, Tokopedia through Tokopedia Hijau movement invites as many people as possible to actively protect the environment," said Aditia Grasio Nelwan, Public Affairs Senior Lead Tokopedia.

Sales of air purifiers on Tokopedia have increased three times; see five tips to deal with pollution

The current unhealthy air quality has affected people's online shopping trends for various products to protect their families from air pollution. Tokopedia, through Aditia, also shared five tips to deal with poor air quality.

1. Improve indoor air quality

"To improve indoor air quality, people can utilize products such as air purifiers with HEPA Filter technology that can clean small particles in the air, including dust, bacteria, and other pollutants," said Aditia. Sales of air purifiers through Tokopedia in the first two weeks of August 2023, compared to the average bi-weekly transactions in the second quarter of 2023, have almost tripled.

Air purifiers can also be combined with air-purifying plants, such as aloe vera, snake plant, or areca palm. Air-purifying plants can absorb microscopic particles and other pollutants, such as benzene, formaldehyde, and ammonia.

"We recorded that sales of air purification plants through Tokopedia for the first two weeks of August 2023 were almost doubled, compared to the average bi-weekly transaction in the second quarter of 2023," Aditia explained.

2. Caring for your health amid high air pollution

Air pollution can trigger health problems like flu, cough, and Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI). "To mitigate the risks of respiratory infections, it is recommended to use a medical mask outdoors, take immunity-boosting vitamins and recommended medication if you experience symptoms of respiratory problems," said Aditia.

"According to Tokopedia data, eucalyptus oil, asthma nebulizer medication, medical masks, cold and cough medicine, and vitamins were some of the best-selling health products in the first two weeks of August 2023, compared to the average bi-weekly transactions in the second quarter of 2023," Aditia explained.

"The public can access medicines, masks, vitamins, and other health products through the Tokopedia Zona Sehat page. "There is a ‘Traktiran Hemat Lindungi dari Polusi’ promo with flash sales twice daily up to 90%," added Aditia.

3. Protect skin health from exposure to pollutants

Apart from impacting respiratory health, air pollution can also trigger skin disorders, such as acne, dermatitis, and others. "To keep the skin healthy and protected from the harmful effects of air pollution, use skincare products that contain antioxidants so they can protect the skin from free radicals and other pollutants," said Aditia.

"Sales of anti-pollutant skincare, such as sunscreen, serum, and facial cleanser through Tokopedia have increased 1.5 times in the first two weeks of August 2023, compared to the average bi-weekly transaction in the second quarter of 2023," Aditia added.

4. Manage household waste

People's habit of piling and burning garbage can worsen air quality. The public can take wise steps in managing waste by applying the 3R principles: reduce, reuse, and recycle.

"For example, to reduce usage of single-use plastic bottle waste, you can bring a tumbler instead. Reusable makeup remover can also be reused daily, and used cardboard packages can be recycled to make stationery," explained Aditia. By applying these principles, everyone can contribute to reducing CO2 levels in the air, which usually arise from post-consumer waste or waste-burning activities.

"Tokopedia, through the Tokopedia Hijau movement, invites the public to play an active role in protecting the environment. People who shop through Tokopedia Hijau can reduce post-consumer waste because the goods sent will use a more environmentally friendly packaging, such as paper wrap, shredded paper, pineapple fiber, and other alternatives. Tokopedia Hijau aligns with one of GoTo's ESG commitments, which is zero waste," said Aditia.

5. Switch to public modes of transportation to help reduce harmful pollutants

Taking public transportation can be another effort to help reduce air pollution. By choosing public transportation, people help reduce pollutants and support an active lifestyle that benefits physical health.

To make it easier for people to use various types of public transportation, Tokopedia has an electronic money top-up service that can be used anytime and anywhere. In addition, there are also ticket purchase services for modes of transportation such as trains and planes for further mobility needs.

"Electronic money top-up transactions via Tokopedia during the first two weeks of August 2023 have increased 1.5 times, compared to the average bi-weekly transactions in the second quarter of 2023," concluded Aditia.
