Tokopedia’s Hyperlocal Initiative Boosts  Balikpapan’s MSME Transactions in 2021

Balikpapan, February 10, 2022 – Tokopedia's Hyperlocal initiative has brought many positive impacts in various regions including Balikpapan. As a result of this initiative, MSME transactions in Balikpapan through Tokopedia have doubled in 2021 compared to 2020.

Balikpapan Mayor Rahmad Mas’ud, said, “We appreciate Tokopedia’s efforts in developing Balikpapan-based MSMEs. There must be synergy between the Government and the private sector in order to drive economic development in Balikpapan.”

“In Balikpapan, Food & Beverage, Mom & Baby, as well as Kid’s Fashion, Health, Beauty, and Household are some of the top-selling categories for Tokopedia in 2021 compared to the previous year,” explained Public Policy and Government Relations Lead of Tokopedia, Emmiryzan. Tokopedia also reveals online shopping trends in Balikpapan throughout 2021.

  1. Food and Beverage – Meat, food packages and parcels, and milk enjoyed a rise in demand among Balikpapan residents during 2021 compared to 2020.
    "Local food and beverage businesses in Balikpapan experienced a nearly 2.5-fold increase in transactions during 2021 compared to the previous year," said Emmir.
  2. Mom & Baby, Kid’s Fashion – "In the Mom & Baby and Kid's Fashion categories, we can see that products such as diapers, baby food and milk, and school uniforms were some of the most sought-after products in Balikpapan in 2021 compared to 2020," added Emmir.
  3. Health – Masks, hygiene kits, and nutritional products for pregnant women were some of the best-selling products in Balikpapan in 2021 compared to the previous year.
  4. Beauty – “In Balikpapan, there was an increase in sales of beauty products such as face and body paints, makeup cleansers, and hair accessories compared to the previous year,” explained Emmir.
  5. Household – In the household category, home essentials, motors and power transmissions, as well as machinery items enjoyed a boost in popularity among Balikpapan residents in 2021 compared to the previous year.

These exciting findings were the result of Tokopedia’s Hyperlocal initiative that was implemented in 2021 as a way to bring buyers closer to their local sellers with the help of programs such as Waktu Indonesia Belanja (WIB) Lokal, Kumpulan Toko Pilihan (KTP), Bangga Buatan Indonesia, and many others.

Sambal Raja Roa is an example of a Balikpapan-based business that actively participates in Kumpulan Toko Pilihan (KTP) Tokopedia and has experienced a threefold increase in sales as a result of the program,” explained Emir.
